1893 – How I occupied the Christmas Holidays 93

15 Dec – Came home by the half past four train from Hayle.

16 Dec – Saturday In the morning went down and had a look at the Rosedale when the men were working at her.  In the afternoon met John Hodge and went all over her with him.  In the evening went over to Mr Jones’ class.

17 Dec – Sunday  In the morning went to church.  Stayed in in the afternoon and evening with mother.

18 Dec – Monday  In the morning went up to Charlotte’s with Pears Annual for Mr Griffin.  Mother and I intended to go to Lelant yesterday in the afternoon but it turned out muggy and rainy and we had to stay at home.  In the evening Mr Jones came in and had supper with us.

19 Dec – In the early morning very rainy but cleared up about half past nine.  Raining in and out in the afternoon.  In the evening mother went up to Charlotte’s.

20 Dec – Wednesday.  Stormy and rainy all the morning.  Stayed in and read “Adrift in the Pacific” finished it in the evening.  Did not go out except to the post for mother.  In the evening mother went up to Mrs Read, Albany.  In the evening the glass went up and Mr Hebblethwaite came in and stayed til a quarter past ten.

21 Dec – Thursday.  In the morning a few showers.  Went to Penzance with mother by the 12.25 and nearly missed it.  Had tea at Miss Pentreath.  Came back by the mail.  In the evening went over to Mr Jones but he put the class off till Friday tomorrow.  Pitman’s Shorthand Weekly came.

22 Dec – Friday.  Very wet.  In the morning wrote and sent Christmas card to William Smales, Barter and Joe Dunn.  Mr Jones came over to tell me to come tomorrow Saturday, at 3¼ pm. In the afternoon posted the letters.  Mrs Hain sent mother some celery.  In the evening Mr and Mrs Staff and Mr Hunt came up and stayed till 11¼.

23 Dec – In the morning very fine.  Thought of going to Carbis Bay but went down and had a look at the Rosedale.  Post very late.  In the afternoon went over to Mr Jones for my class, Martin Cock was there also.  Mr Jones gave him and me a book on holy communion.

24 Dec – Sunday.  Went to church in the morning.  Very wet.  Cissy stayed home.  Wet and dull in the afternoon.  Storm cone up.  In the evening looked through some old religious books.

25 Dec – Christmas Day.  Monday.  Mr Jones, Mr Griffin and Mrs Griffin came to dinner.  Mother and I went to early service, communion.  Lovely day.  I had a card from John Eadie and Miss Hackman.  Mr Jones, Griffin and Mrs Griffin stayed and had tea with us.  Mr Jones stayed here till nearly one o’clock.

26 Dec – Tuesday.  In the morning put the clock together.  In the afternoon went to Carbis Bay to see the lines of the wrecks.  Mild weather.  In the evening mother and Cissy went to a concert in aid of St Ives free something or other.  I did some shorthand.

27 Dec – Wednesday.  Daniel came for me in the morning, I went up to Tregenna and had some dinner with him.  Had a game of billiards with him.  He went by the 4.20 train to Plymouth.  Morwenna not very well.

28 Dec – In the morning smashed up the small house and went up to Mrs Hain with a message from mother.  In the afternoon went with John Hodge to sail boats.  Went 3 places.  Letters from Barbados from Captain.

29 Dec – Friday.  Not very well.  Stayed in all day.  There were two meetings in the dining room.  At home day.  Went to bed at six o’clock.

30 Dec – Stayed in bed til eleven o’clock.  Dressed and stayed in the house all the day.  In the evening Mr Jones came in and had some supper with us.  Played a bit.

31 Dec – Last day in the year.  Sunday.  Stayed in all day.  Mr Jones and Miss Read came up to tea.  “Fini”  In the evening Mr and Mrs Fuller came in with Pip.  Miss Read came back from church with Cissy.

Monday, 1^st January 1894 – I had nothing particular to do; roamed about.  Percy Toy showed me his collection of stamps.  Mr Hodge, John Hodge’s father, went by the twelve train.  In the afternoon went up to Charlotte’s to get the brooch for Cissy.  In the evening mother and Cissy went up to the Reads, Albany Terrace.  I am not very well got a cold.  Mother went to the watch night service.  Charlotte showed me the front lights which they had second hand.  They looked very nice.

Tuesday, 2^nd January 1894 – Stayed in all morning.  In the afternoon intended to go and sail boats with John Hodge but it was too cold.  In the afternoon mother went to call the boat and then went to Lelant.  Mr Hebblethwaite came up in evening and wanted me to write about the electrical communication with lighthouses.  He said he would look out some stamps for me.  An easterly wind blowing all the day.  Mother got two telegrams about the arrival of the Garonne in which she thinks there must be a mistake.

Wednesday, 3^rd January 1894 – Very cold and freezing in the morning.  I stayed in bed till nearly one o’clock.  Got up and had dinner.  Stayed in the house all the afternoon.  I had a letter from Barter in the morning together with a new postcard.  At five o’clock mother and Cissy went over to see Charlie Jones who had a very bad cold.  A house at Hellsveor was burnt down and a little child burnt to death.

Thursday, 4^th January 1894 – Stayed in bed in the morning with a cold.  Got up at 11½.  In the afternoon stayed in all the time.  A lot of grey birds hopping about.  Went to bed at 9 in the evening.  Mr Jones came in.  There was a tea for the fishermen at the school room.  I got a letter from Willie by the evening post.

Friday, 5^th January 1894 – Got out of bed for breakfast today.  A lot of grey birds hopping about.  Some boys out in the front trying to catch them.  I had one or two shots with my catapult.  In the afternoon Mrs Lang came in and Miss Read.  Old Anthony died.  In the evening mother went over to Mr Jones.  Charlotte came down.  Everything frozen up.  Mr Hebblethwaite came in in the evening.  A little bit of snow.

Saturday, 6^th January 1894 – In the morning snowing and very cold.  Some boys were catching birds out in the front.  In the afternoon I paid Mrs Boase’s bill and got 4 shillings discount.  Came home and stayed with a boy who was catching birds with a kip.  He caught two at the same time.  At five o’clock went over to Mr Jones and Mrs Hughes was there.  The Vicar came in and after they went I had a bit of tea with mother and Charlotte and Griffin came in afterwards.  He showed me the cards.

Sunday, 7^th January 1894 – Did not go to church for the day.  Mr Hebblethwaite came up to afternoon tea.  In the evening I went over to see Mr Jones who had a swollen cheek.  Had a bit of supper.

Monday, 8^th January 1894 – In the morning cold and windy.  Some boys were catching birds and M? M?caught seven or eight with a catapult.  Mrs Berriman came for the day to do some sewing for mother.  Tried to put mother’s machine right but could not.  Went over to enquire for Mr Jones and found him nearly all right again.  In the evening mother went down to the club.  Came raining in the afternoon.  Stopped in the evening.  Wrote to William Smales and H G Barter.  Hope to get a reply soon.

Tuesday, 9^th January 1894 – In the morning went over to see how Mr Jones was.  Much better.  Paid Pearce the butcher’s bill, Roberts, and Coopers for a frame.  Muggy weather.  Mrs Berriman helping mother with dress for Mamie.  In the afternoon went down and had a look at the steamer.  They were taking out a bit of the shaft with the cranks on it.  Mr Jones came in in the evening.  Got the watch from Spray.  It cost seven shillings.  I put a pin in it.  Damp and muggy weather in the afternoon and evening.  Went to bed at nearly twelve.

Wednesday, 10^th January 1894 – In the morning went down to see the steamer.  They got out the crank bit of the shaft and pulled it up to the small railway.  In the afternoon it turned out muggy and wet.  Old Anthony was buried.  Mrs Berriman worked for mother.  In the evening read through some old “Boys Own Papers”.

Thursday, 11^th January 1894 – In the morning went up to Charlotte’s with some clothing for the people burnt out of house and home.  Charlotte said she would give them to someone else more deserving.  Muggy and cloudy weather.  Mrs Berriman helping mother.  In the evening Mr Jones came in and played a bit, played a duet with Cissy.  Stayed till 11½ I think.  His cold is much better but still bad.  Wet.

Friday, 12^th January 1894 – Went up to Mr Griffin’s for the day.  Cleaned his filter.   Had dinner with them.  In the afternoon went with Charlotte to see the house that had been burnt down.  Sailed my small boat a bit.  Saw a man accuse two boys of killing a duck.  Mrs Berriman with mother.  Miss Little and Mrs Atkin came in to afternoon tea.  My savings bank book came.  Took his “Physics and Chemistry” book up to him.

Saturday, 13^th January 1894 – In the morning cleared up the bottom garden and brought in all the sticks.  In the afternoon paid Mrs Hamlyn’s bill and got 4 shillings discount.  Got a letter from Arthur Williams.  Went down to see Martin Cock.  He was not too well.  Wrote a letter to Arthur Williams.  Mother had a bath.  I regulated the old grandfather clock a bit.

Sunday, 14^th January 1894 – In the morning went to church.  After church watered Mrs Hackman’s flowers and put her clock to rights.  In the evening put mine to rights.  Posted letters to Arthur Williams and Jewel Pen Company for catalogue.

Monday, 15^th January 1894

Hayle Grammar School re-opens

In the morning went down on the beach with Martin Cock.  Dispensed with my pen for 9 shillings.  Paid Mrs Pascoe’s bill £6.3.10.  Cissy and Morwenna up at Charlotte’s all the day.  Went to school in the evening by the 8 o’clock train.

Tuesday, 16^th January 1894 – Stayed in bed in the morning till 8½ am.  We had no lessons.  Had our shorthand class in the morning.  In the afternoon we had lessons set, etc.  In the evening Arthur Williams’ papers came.  Tested them and found 5 out of 7 to be right.

Wednesday, 17^th January 1894 – Got down by 8.  Nasty muggy weather.  Not turned in any lessons.  Had drawing in the morning.  In the afternoon went over on the Towans and had a look at an old engine.  Passed a funeral.  Harvey Pool worked his engine.

Thursday, 18^th January 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  Wrote to mother telling her to send the key to my bag.  In the evening had a fun lark and after school Everett smashed a lamp glass and ? ? window.  Jimmy done in.  And Mr Wagner at the lodge.

Friday, 19^th January 1894 – Turned in principal particulars of verbs.  We all did arithmetic in the evening and Harvey Pool worked his engine with only one cylinder.  In the evening got a key from mother.

Saturday, 20^th January 1894 – In the morning drawing and shorthand.  Walked home as far as Carbis Bay with Tom Quick.  In the afternoon tried my locomotive but it would not go.  Tried the marine engine with the lamp of the loco and it went very well.  Mother and Cissy went up to Charlotte’s and in the evening I went down to see Martin Cock.

Sunday 21st January 1894 – Went to early service and church in the morning.  A missionary preached.

Monday, 22^nd January 1894 – I went by the eight o’clock train. Got in the train as it was whistling.  Martin Cock came over to school for the first time to learn shorthand.  We had writing in the afternoon.

Tuesday, 23^rd January 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  Wet and muggy weather.  Went out in the evening in Everett’s boat for a sail, not much wind.

Wednesday, 24^th January 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  In the evening we had a paper chase and Johnny Hale and Monson were hares.  Willie fell into a stream and caught a bad cold.

Thursday, 25^th January 1894 – The College of Preceptors results came in the morning by post and by newspaper.  I myself have been passed 2 class first division.  Joe and Williams third class first division.  Not turned in any lessons.  Willie very bad.  In the evening Tommy worked his engine.

Friday, 26^th January 1894 – Friday.  Willie stayed in bed in the morning.  Not turned in any lessons.  Mr Curnow and Willie England at school.  Tommy worked his engine and found out that it was leaking.  Did arithmetic in the evening.

Saturday, 27^th January 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  Had drawing.  Arthur Williams came down from Hayle thinking that the result of his exam was come.  In the afternoon went up to the new house with mother and met Mr Grier on the way.  Cases of fruit came.  Drizzling rain.  In the evening went over to Mr Jones to ask him over to dinner and I stayed to tea.  He came in 9½.  Went to Mrs Hamlyn to see how the pen was getting on.  Saw Martin.  Wrote for new pen.

Sunday, 28^th January 1894 – Went to church in the morning.  In the evening Mr Jones came in and we had a pineapple.

Monday, 29^th January 1894 – Came over by the eight o’clock train.  Martin Cock came also.  Sent for my pen and changed two postal orders for Mr Wagner £6:12:9 together.  In the morning the Henry Fisher ran on the bar.  Had a spar with Johnny.  Cock said I did very well.

Tuesday, 30^th January 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  I wrote to Martin Cock for Smales.  The Henry Fisher still on the bar.

Wednesday, 31st January 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  In the evening went down with Harvey Pool to sail a ? of his.  It rained hard.  The other boys went on the Towans.  Bill Richards and Cecil Hill got a 2 shillings horizontal engine and ? got two one shilling inverted cylinder.  They each gave them a trial trip and all worked very well.  My Swan fountain pen came in the morning.  Registered.

Thursday, 1st February 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  Damp weather.  In the evening went down to a public hall comedy eight to 10½.  All the boarders went.  Cyril Thomas got in for nothing.  Harvey and Mrs Pool were there.

Friday, 2^nd February, 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  Arthur Williams’ result came.  He is now qualified for the first.  At 9 o’clock Smales and Val went up to tell him.  And they came back again by nearly one o’clock.  Arthur gave me some apples.

Saturday, 3^rd February 1894 – Turned in history.  Finished the copy in drawing.  Walked home all the way.  Met Fraser and Bruce Eadie and later on met Mr Robert Reed.  Came home and saw the captain for the first time.  In the afternoon went down and had a look at the new west pier and went down as far as the cliff of Porthmeor.  Charlotte was down.

Sunday, 4^th February 1894 – Captain home.  Went to church in the morning with mother.  The captain wrote some letters.  In the evening went up to Charlotte’s.

Monday, 5^th February 1894 – Came over by the 8 o’clock train.  Martin Cock came with me.  Mr Cock gave Smales, Bill and Martin the row and reported them to Mr Wagner.  He spoke very well of reporting boys.  Mr Wagner gave me a Colomba and key.  In the evening Philips came over and stayed the night.  I was the only boy from St Ives that came over.

Tuesday, 6^th February 1894 – Sydney Richards put bills of our football match in four or five windows.  We had pancakes in the evening.  Crossed out:  I think it was today that I had my Colomba.  Bill and Cecil worked their engines.

Wednesday, 7^th February 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  In the afternoon went out on the croquet green and had a game of football.  I played back.  We had drawing in the morning.

Thursday, 8^th February 1894 – We had a half holiday and played a match against Redruth in which we were beaten by one try.  Went out in Everett’s boat but it was too shallow to have a proper sail so we came back again and went up to William’s to see if the engines were come.

Friday, 9^th February 1894 – Joe Dunn sold me an old watch for my 1/-  Philosopher sous les Toits.  It will work over 5 hours.  Not turned in any lessons.

Saturday, 10^th February 1894 – Not turned in lesson.  Walked home, left Hayle by twelve and got home before the train.  In the afternoon went down and had a look at the Rosedale.  The old grandfather’s clock going all right.

Sunday, 11^th February 1894 – Did not go to church.  I had the beginning of influenza.

Monday, 12^th February 1894 – Came over to school.  In the morning did shorthand.  Mr Cock gave us a sermon on the ? on the ?

Tuesday, 13^th February 1894 – At school.

Wednesday, 14^th February 1894 – A ? ? ? with goal.  Jimmy gave ? 100 lines but reduced them to 50.  Val’s birthday.  He had a good many presents.  ? from Freeman and ball from his two sisters.  In the afternoon went on the Towans and had a game of football.

Thursday, 15^th February 1894 – At school.  Turned in French grammar.  Did a little shorthand in the morning.  In the afternoon dictation.  After tea we had game of hockey in which Johnny struck me across the leg.  I hit him another time not for the ? and he hit me again, then I hit him 2 or 3 times.  Church in the evening.

Friday, 16^th February 1894 – At school.

 

Saturday, 17^th February 1894 – Rainy day.  Came home by the twelve train.

Sunday, 18^th February 1894 – Stayed in bed today.  Mr Hebblethwaite and Miss Reed came up to afternoon tea.

Monday, 19^th February 1894 – Bad in bed with influenza.

Tuesday, 20^th February 1894 – Bad in bed with influenza.

Wednesday, 21^st February 1894 – Bad in bed with influenza.

Thursday, 22^nd February 1894 – Bad in bed with influenza.

Friday, 23^rd February 1894 – Bad in bed with influenza.

Saturday, 24^th February 1894 – Got up in the morning.  Dr Staff came.  The competition for 3 best sentences closes.

Sunday, 25^th February 1894 – Got up but stayed in house all day.

Monday, 26^th February 1894 – Got up.  In the evening, Mr Charles Jones came in.  I was putting in some stamps in my album.

Tuesday, 27^th February 1894 – Got up at half past ten and went down on the beach and had a look at the Rosedale.  The chain snapped once when pulling at a piece of iron.  In the afternoon stayed in and dug up a little of the front garden.  Mrs Rodd came in to see me.  Mr Seagrim came with a church paper.  I went into Mrs Hackman’s house and wound the clocks up.  Mr Barlow was painting his picture.

Wednesday, 28^th February 1894 – In the morning went up to Charlotte’s.  She has a very bad big toe.  Mr Griffin showed Cissy and I his tricks.  Cissy stayed all day.  I came home for dinner.  After dinner mother went out.  I fired my cannon in my bedroom 5 or 6 shots.  I put the coal house door to.  Paid Mrs Williams’ bill £2 15 9.  I had 2 shillings discount.  In the evening mother went down to church.  Mr Jones christening a baby for the first time.  Jane Richards’ baby.  Took the cover off Tom Quick.

Thursday, 1^st March 1894 – Wet and rainy all day.  Did a bit of shorthand in the morning and Cissy took baby up to Charlotte’s to amuse her.  In the afternoon I framed two frames for mother.  One a picture of a boat and the other of the town.  Got my pair of patent shoes.  Buggins came home from Charlotte’s.  Mr Griffin had shown Miss Reed the tricks.  Mr Jones came in.  Mother had been at the league of the old women given by Mr Jones.

Friday, 2^nd March 1894 – In the morning went up to Charlotte’s with mother.  Mr Griffin showed us the half-farthing trick, the half-crown in the box etc.  I fired my cannon off out of the window.  Fired 3 times altogether.  3 boats in the harbour.  The Salisbury, Hayle and Carnsaw.  Put my fountain pen in the stocks all night.  Mr Jones went up to Charlotte’s.  Mr Fuller and his wife came in to afternoon tea.

Saturday, 3^rd March 1894 – In the morning went up to Charlotte’s to bring down some ?  Mr Griffin gave me 3 letters to post.  In the afternoon Buggins went up to Mrs Hain’s with Mamie.  The three steamers went out and the Dewi Lass also went up.  I watched the latter from the new west pier.  Mother went to Truro by the 9.45 train and came home by the last train.  I had a bath in the evening.

Sunday, 4^th March 1894 – Went to early service.  After breakfast went up to Charlotte’s with Buggins.  Dr Staff came whilst we were there to see her toe.  He walked down with us and he said I had better stay at home.  In the evening Charles Jones came in to supper

Monday, 5^th March 1894 – In the morning went up to Mrs Staff with hat pins which mother had borrowed from her.  After that I went down and had a look at the Rosedale.  I came home and tried that old boat but it was not a success.  I wound up the grandfathers clock.  Mrs Berriman here working for mother.  Cissy and Buggins and Mamie went up to Charlotte’s and had tea there.  Mother not very well in the evening.

Tuesday, 6^th March 1894 – In the morning Mrs Berriman came to help mother.  I went down and cleaned and filled Mrs Hamlyn’s pen for her.  Then I went up to the house in search of Mr Toy but failed to find him.  I cleared out my drawer.  Raining in the early morning.  In the afternoon I went nearly to Clodgy Point.  In the evening Mrs Toy came in.  I bathed my face.

Wednesday 7^th March 1894 – In the morning I chopped up some sticks.  Mrs Berriman was here and Lucy’s father to do up the garden.  Muggy and drizzling weather.  In the afternoon Morwenna and myself went up to Charlotte’s.  They were in the drawing room.  Mr Griffin writing and Charlotte sewing.  We had tea with them.  In the evening mother went to church and I did 120 words in shorthand and went down to see Martin Cock.  After church Miss Dupen came in.  I read some of my Every Boys Book.

Thursday, 8^th March 1894 – In the morning Mrs Berriman came to help mother.  I copied out the paper on my father’s estate.  In the afternoon went down and had a look at Mr Fuller’s pictures with Cissy and mother.  In the evening mother and Cissy went down to the social.  In the evening Mr Jones came in.  We had his tongue.  It was twelve o’clock before I was in bed.  Fired my canon twice.  I screwed the fans on my windmill.  The Trewidden, one of Hain’s boats, passed by.

Friday, 9^th March 1894 – In the morning I stayed in and read the paper.  I wrote nearly 2 sides of the foolscap in shorthand.  The Llandaff, a little schooner and the East Country Bow were in the bay.  I chopped up a few sticks for Lucy.  Mother cross with me.

Saturday, 10^th March 1894 – In the morning I cleaned up the garden a bit and dug the sunny side up.  Morwenna and myself had a bonfire.  In the afternoon I dug up the small potato piece.  I fired my canon 3 times.  In the evening I had a bath.  Mr Jones came in.  I wound up the grandfathers clock.

The Sneyd was in the bay.  I cleaned up my marine engine.

Sunday, 11^th March 1894 – In the morning went to church with mother and Cissy.  In the afternoon I stayed in with mother.  Went out to Godrevy Bay.  It was very rough.  In the evening Mr Hebblethwaite and Miss Reed came up to tea.  Huby brought the scales for the bazaar.

Monday, 12^th March 1894 – I came over by the eight o’clock train.  Martin Cock did not come at all.  In the afternoon Joe and I wrote the masonic envelopes and folded up the notice of meetings, etc.  In the evening Smales and Johnny worked their engines.  Johnny vexed with me.

Tuesday, 13^th March 1894 – In the morning turned in French vocab.  In the afternoon did Euclid.  In the afternoon during the drilling time Jimmy had read out 60 ? words to us and in the evening we transcribed them.

Wednesday, 14^th March 1894 – Wednesday.  In the morning did drawing and shorthand.  There was a row about the window.  In the afternoon we went out for a walk.  Willie had a smack on the ear from Jimmy.  Johnny’s leg bad.

Thursday, 15^th March 1894 – In the morning not turned in any lessons.  We said our French verbs and ? and ? the vocab.  Did shorthand in the morning.  In the afternoon did algebra.

Friday, 16^th March 1894 – Friday.  Not turned in any lessons.  I did not say my Latin but did some for Mr Wagner.  In the afternoon did Euclid and algebra and shorthand.  The others drilled in the field.  Richard Hodge and John Rowe home with the influenza.

Saturday, 17^th March 1894 – In the morning whilst chopping sticks I hit my head with the hatchet.  Walked home all the way.  In the afternoon went down on the beach and sent off some cork boats.  I met Mamie and Buggins on the sand and built up a pond.  In the evening Mr Jones came in.  I filled my Swan.  Wound all the watches up in the evening.

Sunday, 18^th March 1894 – In the morning went to church.  In the afternoon stayed in.  Miss Reed came up to tea.  In the evening all went to church except me and I stayed home and kept house.

Monday, 19^th March 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  Shorthand in the morning.  I ordered a bottle of ink for Mrs Hamlyn.  Copy-book writing in the afternoon.  I had 50 lines in the evening.

Tuesday, 20^th March 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  Had a game of ? in the morning before school.  Did shorthand in the morning.

Wednesday, 21^st March 1894 – In the morning drawing.  We had a mouse below.  Had to take it out of the room.  In the afternoon went to ?? to ? bottoms.  Not turned in any lessons because of exercise.  Had a game of football in the playground.  Gerald Hawkins got his ??

Thursday, 22^nd March 1894 – Turned in French vocab.  Said it to Mr Dunn.  I walked home 5½ hours.  The others intended to come home by the 4½ train but Mr Wagner would not let them.  Walked home with Willie and Curnow.  Tried Willie’s cylinders but they would not do.

Friday, 23^rd March 1894 (Good Friday) – In the morning went up to St John’s with Cissy with some flowers.  After that I went up to Consols and had a look at them sailing boats.  ? Quick and Johnny Hodge were there also.  I watered Mrs Hackman’s flowers.

Saturday, 24^th March 1894 – In the morning went up to St John’s with Cissy, Mamie and Morwenna.  I did a bit of decorating and went up to the belfry with Curnow.  Mamie, Morwenna and Cissy stayed to dinner with Charlotte and I came home and had dinner with mother.  I went with mother and had a look at the pictures.  Saw a ? ship.  I made a windmill and painted the old one black and put the new tail board on it.  Letter from Arthur Williams.

Sunday, 25^th March 1894 (Easter Day) – In the morning went to early service.  Mother and Mamie and Morwenna went to St John’s.  I walked up with them and came down again.  I watered Mrs Hackman’s flowers.  In the evening went to church.  Mr Jones sang a solo.  Cissy, Buggins and myself sat up near the choir.  Mother and Mamie a little behind.  The church was crowded.

Monday, 26^th March 1894 – Easter Monday.  Bank holiday.  In the morning went to Mr Pearce to tell him to send a crate.  Went on the pier and saw the boats going out.  Planted the seeds and potatoes in the bottom garden.  And watered Mrs Hackman’s flowers.  Wound up the clocks and old grandfather’s clock.  The bazaar for the fire brigade at the Board School.  Mother and Cissy taking part.  In the evening a concert in which Cissy and Mr Jones took part.  I wrote out a thing for the competition.

Tuesday, 27^th March 1894 – Came to school by the 10 train.  Shorthand in the morning.  Mr Cock brought the ink from Mrs Hamlyn.  Euclid in the afternoon.  Harvey Poole had to ?  Jimmy Dunn sent away for ? shorthand books. Pat in in the evening.

Wednesday, 28^th March 1894 – Slept in a bit in the morning but got down before Mr Wagner.  In the afternoon went over on the Towans and had a game of cricket and caught a lizard.

Thursday, 29^th March 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  Harvey Poole was bad ? morning over a ??  Fired ? cannon twice, once at this book.  George in in the evening.

Friday, 30^th March 1894 – In the morning wrote to mother and did arithmetic in the morning.  Turned in point?  We had some 600 words in shorthand.

Saturday, 31^st March 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  Drawing in the morning.  Walked home all the way, Johnny walked as far as Carbis Bay with me.  Tommy Quick brought a parcel of masonic things for R. S. Reed.  In the afternoon went with mother to Sampsons and was measured for a suit of clothes.  I watered the flowers in the bottom garden.  The sunflowers just making an appearance above the ground.  Took the ink into Mrs Hamlyn’s.  Mr took it.

Sunday, 1^st April 1894 – In the morning went to St John’s church.  Mr Griffin bad in bed.  Mr Tribe preached.  In the afternoon wrote to Arthur Williams.

Monday, 2^nd April 1894 – Came over by the eight train.  Mr Wagner made a row about the shorthand.  In the afternoon copybook writing.  Smales came over in the afternoon.  Instead of doing French in the evening did shorthand.

Tuesday, 3^rd April 1894 – In the morning said our English lessons and then had a test in shorthand, the best yet I have done.  Harvey Pool gave me some seeds.  In the evening shorthand.

Wednesday, 4^th April 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  Drawing in the morning.  In the afternoon we went over on the Towans and had a game of nine holes.  Did shorthand in the evening.

Thursday, 5^th April 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  Wrote out our dictation mistakes.  In the afternoon had a test in dictation.

Friday, 6^th April 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  Looked up and said first French curve of ?  Did shorthand in the evening.

Saturday, 7^th April 1894 – In the morning drawing.  Pool was sent up to Mr Wagner and had 4 hits with the cane.  Came home by the train.  Got onto it without my ticket.  All the others did the same.  We got a ticket at St Erth.  In the afternoon I worked my engine.  She went very well.  I filled the pistons a bit.

Sunday, 8^th April 1894 – In the morning did not go to church.  Went on the beach in the afternoon.  Stayed at home in the evening.

Monday, 9^th April 1894 – Came over by the 8 train with Martin Cock.  Mr Cock gave us a piece of shorthand and I had 17 mistakes.  Did shorthand in the evening.

Tuesday, 10^th April 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  We had a piece of shorthand for a test and I had 7 mistakes.  The best so far.  Did shorthand in the evening.

Wednesday, 11^th April 1894 – In the morning drawing.  In the afternoon I went up to Joe’s place with Sidney Mitchell and had tea with him.  His mother was out.  Did shorthand in the evening.

Thursday, 12^th April 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  Did shorthand in the evening.  I made a boat to send out to sea.

Friday, 13^th April 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  Willie Smales came home by the 4½ train and I came home by the 6.35.  Mr Jones came in in the evening.  I wore my shoes for the first time.  Wound up all my watches.

Saturday, 14^th April 1894 – In the morning went down on the pier and had a look at the Susan Elizabeth going out.  The wind was dead south.  Three quarters of the boats were out.  ? and Mr ? were on the pier too.  In the afternoon I went on the beach and sent off 5 boats including the one I made on Thursday.  Some nice showers and sunshine in between of wind.  ? came onto ?

Sunday, 15^th April 1894 – In the morning went up to Mr Griffin’s with mother.  Mr Griffin preached 10 minutes.  Miss Reed and Mr R Reed came up to tea.  In the evening Cissy went to church.  Mother and myself stayed at home.

Monday, 16^th April 1894 – In the morning fired off my cannon three times.  Mother was cleaning up the study.  We went down to Mr Docton’s to see about my new grey coat.  I made a little engine with a paint pot.

Tuesday, 17^th April 1894 – Wet in the morning.  I put the face of the grandfather’s clock on.  Wrote to Mrs Hackman.  In the evening Mr Jones came in and I gave him a good many stamps.  He invited me to tea on Saturday.

Wednesday, 18^th April 1894 – In the morning went down on the beach (meor).  I worked my way up to the quarry and came home with a small bunch of primroses.  In the afternoon went down on the west pier and sent off some 3 boats.  I went to see Mr Hebblethwaite but could get no answer so I came home.  Charlotte was down in the afternoon.  I had a game of tennis with Morwenna in the court.  The “Arthur” came in the harbour.  A couple of steamboats knocking about in the bay.  Some east country boats in the harbour.

Thursday, 19th April 1894 – In the morning went up to Charlotte’s and sailed my boat.  Saw the owner of the pool.

Friday, 20^th April 1894 – In the morning went up to Charlotte’s and sailed my boat.  We had a game of tennis.  I took up Charlotte’s bathing drawers.  In the afternoon went in and cleaned Mrs Hackman’s tank.  I bought two turn down collars.  Went down on the pier and saw Tom Quick out in a boat.  ? was down there too.  I went out on the roof of Mr Griffin’s house.  Chyandour went out.  Saw boats in the bay.  “Trio” “C. f 10 N Strong” and Earl of Bute.  Saw the tug in the distance.

Saturday, 21^st April 1894 – I got a vertical engine from Mrs Hackman, the value of which was 1/-.  The Captain went to London by the 11 train.  I went down to see him off.  Buggins and I came home and worked the engine.

Sunday, 22^nd April 1894 – In the morning went to the parish church with mother.  In the afternoon Freddy came in and I showed him my engine and the old quadrant.  I gave him five oranges.

Monday, 23^rd April 1894 – In the morning I made a bookcase for Cissy.  I went down with mother to Sampsons and got a straw hat for myself.  I had a bathe with Willie, Freddy, Jim and Harvey and Cecil Pool.  I had a boat ?? around the pier in their boat.  I watched them go home.  I went down to Mr Hebblethwaite’s with some photographs and had tea with him.  A rough night for the boats.

Tuesday, 24^th April 1894 – In the morning went down on the pier and in the afternoon went down and saw some boats coming in.  In the evening went down for Freddy and went on the pier and the beach.  In the evening Mr Griffin and Mrs Griffin came in and Mr Charles Jones.  Mr Griffin brought his Stylo fountain pen.  Went to tea with Mr Jones and he gave me a good many stamps.  I went to get the coal ?

Wednesday, 25^th April 1894 – In the morning went down on the pier and in afternoon went down also.  In the afternoon Morwenna and I went down in the bottom garden and I tried to make a crane.  I went over to Mr Jones with some oranges and ?? and a few stamps.  He gave us a tongue.  Mother went to church.  In the morning I went down on the beach and saw Johnny and Josh Daniel.  There the Hayle Carnew Erimus and another boat were in the bay.

Thursday, 26^th April 1894 – In the morning went down on the pier with Tom Quick and afterwards we had a bathe at Porthmeor.  Jim, Luke, Willie and Freddie came down afterwards.  I got a letter from E Monson.  I went up on the roof of the Bocastle in the afternoon.  In the evening Miss Reed and Mr Grier came in.  Job Stave’s boat being mended.

Friday, 27^th April 1894 – In the morning paid Mrs Bocase bill, Doctons, Richards and Hamlyns.  I smashed a little dish of my mother’s.  I got 7 shillings’ discount.  Sir W T Lewis in the bay.  In the afternoon Mr Jones came in and Miss Little and Mrs Atkin.  Mr Charles Jones came in in the evening.

Saturday, 28^th April 1894 – In the morning I received a letter from Smales and a postcard from Cecil Hill.  I chopped up some sticks for mother.  The ? went out.  I wrote a postcard to Cecil and mother posted it.  In the evening I went over to Mr Jones to tea and I went out for a walk and met old Berriman.   I planted some sunflowers.

Sunday, 29^th April 1894 – In the morning went to the parish church.  Miss Reed came up to tea.

Monday, 30^th April 1894 – The Flying Phantom in the bay and a small ?? at the end of the pier, name unknown to me.  Also another in the bay.  In the morning came over to school by the 10 train.  Tom Quick did not come.  Johnny had to take a whole ticket.

Tuesday, 1^st May 1894 – Harvey tried to wake me up at six o’clock but failed.  Not turned in any lessons.

Wednesday, 2^nd May 1894 – In the morning drawing.  In the afternoon went out with Harvey Pool in his boat.  Two boats raced us down.  Came from the bar in Everitt’s boat and so/was Harvey’s little ??

Thursday, 3^rd May 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  Jimmy Richards in with Mr Wagner preparing some lessons I think.  Had some four balls out in Rowe’s field.

Friday, 4^th May 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  We said our Geography to Mr Wagner.  In the evening Harvey Pool was swinging on the poles.

Saturday, 5^th May 1894 – In the morning Drawing.  Walked home as far as Carbis Bay.  Mr Wagner gave me a shilling discount.  In the afternoon I transplanted some sunflowers and did some shorthand in the evening.  Mr Jones in in the evening and Mr Fuller brought in a photograph of Cissy.

Sunday, 6^th May 189 – In the morning went to church.  In the afternoon had a bathe with Freddie.  Stayed at home in the evening with mother.  I took my Swan fountain pen to pieces.

Monday, 7^th May 1894 – In the morning came over by the 10 o’clock train.  Martin Cock came by the 8.  Mr Cock was there for the shorthand.

Tuesday, 8^th May 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.

Wednesday, 9^th May 1894 – In the morning drawing.  In the afternoon we went down to Cot Pool and sailed boats.

Thursday, 10^th May 1894 – Not turned in any lessons.  Did shorthand in the evening.

Friday, 11^th May 1894 – In the morning Mr Stallard came up for the shorthand examination.  I thought we did very well.

Saturday, 12^th May 1894 – In the morning Drawing.  I walked home as far as Carbis Bay with Johnny Hodge.  In the afternoon went up to ? as ?? Mrs Griffin were there.  Mr Jones came in in the evening.

Sunday, 13^th May 1894 – In the morning went to early service.  Stayed home from church in the morning and put the old clock together.

Monday, 14 May 1894 – In the morning went down on the beach with Morwenna and took her tray for a boat.  Came home and saw Everett and Jim Harris in his boat in the harbour.  Went down and Everett came up to my place and I went to Hayle with him.  It was rainy all the way.  Got wet through and changed at Mr Wagner’s.  Came home by the 4½ train.  Mr Jones came in.  Mother went up to the Staffs.

Friday, 3 August 1894 – In the morning, the distribution of prizes.  I had the Drawing prize and Dick Hodge the Arithmetic and Mathematics.  Sidney Michell had the English and French.  In the morning came home by the 12½ train.  In the afternoon went on the beach and had a bathe with Tom Quick.

Saturday, 4 August 1894 – In the morning went on the beach with Morwenna and had a bathe.  In the afternoon read Frank Fairley.

Sunday, 5 August 1894 – In the morning went to church to St John’s.  Mr King preached.  Stayed to communion.

Saturday, 18 August 1894 – Harvey Pool and 3 brothers went to Hayle in the boat.  The ? distribution of prizes.  Mr Jones had a row.  They came back again about ten with the boat ? full of water.

Sunday, 19 August 1894 – The Captain home.  Went to the parish church in the evening.

Tuesday, 21 August 1894 – A little steamer alongside the quay.  Wrote to Joe Dunn and Monson.  Made an engine.  Damp weather.

Tuesday, 27 November 1894 – My birthday.  17.

Christmas Day 1894 – A lovely day.  Went to the early service.  In the morning went down on pebble beach.  Charlotte and Mr Griffin came to dinner.  We had goose and 2 fowls.  Some preserved fruit.
